OK, at our last meeting we had talked about installing security
camera systems. Well, a few people said they were considering doing
that and at least one family actually did. They installed the
security cameras and even contacted the Clark County Sheriff and
offered to make available any footage if the sheriff's Dept. was
investigating any local crimes. The sheriff's dept. wrote back and
said they were not interested. Well, not totally. they said that if
a crime were to occur and if you have footage of that then call 911.
But otherwise they didn't have any need for footage.
"Mr.
MacNeil,
There would be no reason for the Sheriff's Office to want or need
recordings from your security camera unless something criminal (or
questionable) were to happen and you had footage that may be of
interest to law enforcement. If that should happen you could call
West Precinct or 911 with your information.
Thank you,
Valerie Deming
Administration"
I guess the frustrating thing about this type of cold
response from the Clark County Sheriff's Dept. is that they are not
seeing the big picture. They are saying that they are not interested
in having someone dropping by a bunch of useless footage and
actually nobody was offering to do that. The thought was that there
are lots of crimes that occur quite often in our neighborhood.
Perhaps if the Sheriff's Dept. had some sort of a spreadsheet that
listed places that had security cameras, perhaps that would be
helpful in solving crimes. I don't think that the Sheriff's Dept.
has the time or resources to check everybody's security camera
footage every time some teenager rings a doorbell and runs away, but
if there was a break-in, a murder, a rape, an assault, a burglary, a
case of major vandalism, a kidnapping or any other major offense
that it might be helpful for the Sheriff's Dept. to have a list of
local area webcams on file. An Excel type sheet like this would
certainly not be a budget breaking item. I mean we're talking about
pennies. And it could possibly be the item that helps solve a major
crime in our neighborhood. Many police departments across the
country are starting to use webcam footage to help solve crimes.
Maybe the footage would not show the actual crime but it might show
street traffic or pedestrian traffic that occurred near the location
of the crime and near the time that the crime occurred. THE
FACT THAT THE CLARK COUNTY SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT IS NOT THE LEAST BIT
INTERESTED IN KNOWING WHAT WEBCAMS MAY BE AVAILABLE TO THEM FOR HELP
IN INVESTIGATING AND SOLVING CRIMES IN OUR NEIGHBORHOOD TELLS US ALL
WHY OUR NEIGHBORHOOD CRIME RATE IS SO HIGH AND NOT GETTING ANY
LOWER. We may all want to keep this in mind in the next
Sheriff election. I think a good question to ask all persons running
for Sheriff is if they think that they would support keeping a list
of area webcams for potential help in solving neighborhood crimes. |

MORE
VANDALISM!

A sad in the
neighborhood. Vandals have been walking home through our
neighborhood nightly and vandalizing personal property. In the last
30 days there have been thefts of catalytic converters, attempted
thefts of tires, car break ins, mail boxes knocked down by vandals
carrying baseball bats, potted plants and planted trees uprooted and
thrown into the streets and various other acts of complete disregard
for our neighborhood. The photo above was taken on NE 18th
AVE. where vandals threw a huge rock at a car parked in front of the
home of one of our neighbors.
PLEASE SIGN UP BELOW TO RECEIVE
UPDATES AND SEND US DETAILS OF ANY RECENT THEFTS OR VANDALISMS YOU
HAVE ENCOUNTERED. I WILL PERSONALLY
PRESENT LOCAL SHERIFF OFFICE WITH ALL REPORTS I RECEIVE SO THEY WILL
BETTER BE ABLE TO HELP US PUT AN END TO THESE TYPES OF EVENTS.

The Stebbins family on
18th AVE always puts up a beautiful Christmas display and they
make it a family affair. |
My goals with this website are almost unlimited
but primarily I thought it could help us all to have a better way to
communicate with each other. This could help in several ways.
Examples of just some of the things we can do with a community
website like this:
• A person who has auto mechanic skills, or
computer repair skills or landscaping talents (or any other
abilities) can post an ad for free on the website so that
neighborhood residents can choose someone to fill their needs from a
person living close by.
• People who have a refrigerator or desk or sofa or anything else
including cars and trucks can post ads for free on the website and
maybe sell it faster.
• People looking for plumbing help, garage door fixes, electrical
repair or any other service can post what they need and maybe
someone living in the neighbor hood will be able to help. maybe no
electrician lives in the neighborhood but perhaps someone living in
the Encore Homes knows a good electrician.
• LOST & FOUND listings can be posted for anything from a pair of
winter gloves to a beloved pet. I will post any photos that are sent
to me.
• Meeting notices can be posted so if there is a meeting about noise
levels at the fairgrounds or a new WalMart being built in our back
yards and there is a community meeting anyone can post specifics
about the meetings.
• Communications can be made EXTREMELY easy. I have made a map
showing every address in Encore Homes. I can make the map
interactive so that if you click on any address it will give a link
to show who lives there and their email address and or phone numbers
etc. This would only be done when residents gave that information
and the OK to post it.
• Posting of HOMES FOR SALE, GARAGE SALES and any other special
events could be done in live time by everyone.
• Maps of the area will be posted so that you can refer friends to
the website if they need to print out a map to find your home.
• There is so much more that we can do and I am sure that over the
coming years we will be adding additional options. |
